Ryan Coogler — Sinners

Every winter in Pernik, Bulgaria, locals put on striking goat-hair costumes and go door to door to chase away evil spirits—a ritual known as kukeri, one of Europe’s few surviving folk traditions.

Drawn by the spectacle, photographer Theo Cottle traveled to capture the event, only to learn it was canceled due to drought. Still, he met with kukeri in their homes, where they proudly brought out their costumes for a series of personal, vibrant portraits.

Joshua Rozells — Satellite Pollution

In January 2021, Joshua Rozells set out to capture a star trail in Western Australia’s Pinnacles Desert. After more than three hours of shooting and reviewing his photos, he discovered that the light patterns weren’t what he had expected.

“There were satellite trails in nearly every photo,” he shared on Instagram. “Rather than eliminating them to create a star trail, I chose to combine the satellite trails into one image to highlight the increasing pollution of our night skies.”
